Spearfish Canyon is south of Lead, South Dakota in the Black Hills. Here I hiked in the forest with my two sisters, following the trail up to Roughlock Falls. Between the Falls and Lead are a waterfall, aspens, meadows, fast rocky streams and trails.

The idea for the Beaver River Project began the day of my dad’s burial in our home town of Albion, Nebraska. With both of my parents gone, I wondered what reason remained to return to this small farming community. But the Beaver Creek beckoned. I would return several times over the next few years to capture the river and surrounding areas throughout the seasons, seeing this familiar landscape with new eyes.

I discovered Rush Creek east of my home in Liberty, Missouri not long after I began teaching art at William Jewell. I took students to the fisherman’s bridge on Richfield Road to draw and paint, and into Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary to do the same. I drew and painted along with them and on my own from the early 1990s and continue to document the area.

A gathering of friends in Minnesota was the perfect setting to capture natural lakes, meadows and rivers. I have described nature in heavily layered textures and serrations using a comb fragment which is skimmed with charcoal. All paintings are 16”x20” acrylic.

My dear friend Ann captured photos of charming dinghies in Rockport, Massachusetts and I interpreted them first in linocut prints and then in color. The paintings are 30x40 inches and the prints are 11x14 inches. The prints were created in 2016 and the paintings were done in 2021.

The Adirondack Series began with 3 successive summers (2009-2011) that I spent at my friend Tam’s camp on Joe Indian Pond in the beautiful Adirondacks, New York. The prints came first. I used a Blick product called Wondercut for my linoleum block prints which cuts easier than regular linoleum. The paintings followed where I explored and reinterpreted basic colors and essential shapes in a bright and bold way on a much larger scale. Prints are 11”x14”. Oil paintings are 30”x40”.

The Norway Series is actually three separate series: Norway Suite, the Innvick Series, and The Norway Series.
The Norway Suite consists of four large 42x42 inch paintings in and around Nordfjord. I captured the images on sabbatical in 1998 and painted them in 1999.
The Innvick Series is across the fjord from Blaksett on the Nordfjord looking at the brightly colored small fields. I created these on a small scale in 2006 and finished up the 16x20 paintings that fall, which are 16”x20” mixed media on canvas.
The Norway Series is based on my summer of 2006 in Norway with cousins and it describes the scenes in and about Nordfjord and around the mouth of Nordfjord to Selja Island. Prints are 11”x14” and oil paintings are 30”x40”.
